DUNKIRK, N.Y. - Three people aboard a small Canadian-registered plane were killed Thursday morning when it crashed after the pilot reported engine problems, U.S. officials said.

Frank Grieco, 56, of Whitby, Ont., his brother, Joseph Grieco, 59, of Oshawa, Ont., and Max Hudson, 55, of Pickering, Ont. were killed in the crash. It was unclear late Thursday which man was the pilot.

Officials said the twin-engined Beech Baron was en route from Oshawa, Ont., to Wilmington, Del.

Officials say the pilot reported trouble in the left engine and received permission to land at the Lake Erie community Dunkirk, about 50 kilometres southwest of Buffalo.

The plane apparently overflew the airport and crashed shortly after 8:30 a.m. EDT in a wooded area less than a kilometre away.
