Toronto police say they have identified two suspects wanted in the murder of Sebastian Herrera, a young man who fell victim to a random robbery and attack in downtown Toronto late last month.

Homicide Det. Stacy Gallant told reporters Wednesday at a news conference that witness reports and footage from surveillance cameras near the scene of the murder helped police identify the wanted men.

Police are looking for suspects Marvin Jerrett, 22, and Jeffrey Larsen, 28. Both are known to frequent the downtown Toronto area.

Both are wanted for first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Investigators were also tipped off to a stolen car that was apparently used as a getaway vehicle at the time of Herrera's murder.

A Toronto resident who heard about the murder on the news spotted the car in a parking lot. After confirming the vehicle's licence plate with news reports, the resident called police with the information.

Herrera, 23, was shot to death in an alleyway behind Ye Olde Brunswick House, a popular pub on Bloor Street West in the city's Annex neighbourhood on July 25.

He was at the pub with his girlfriend and several of their friends when the couple decided to walk to their car, parked at the back of the building, for a cigarette.

Two men in a car approached the couple as they were making their way back to the pub. Police say they were threatened by the passenger of the vehicle. The suspect was carrying a gun when he ordered Herrera to give up the crucifix necklace he was wearing around his neck.

Herrera was shot while he was on the ground. He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead soon after arriving.

His girlfriend was not injured.

The two suspects fled the scene in a car.

Gallant said at the news conference Wednesday that investigators still believe that the victim and the suspects did not each other and that this was a random attack.

The two suspects identified by police both have warrants out for their arrest for previous criminal allegations.
