A 21-year-old man accused of firing a gun inside Toronto's Osgoode subway station is maintaining his innocence, his lawyer said Monday.
The suspect is facing charges in connection with an incident on Jan. 22 that left a 19-year-old man with multiple bullet wounds. The victim is recovering from his injuries.
Investigators say the suspect and the shooting victim had allegedly been squabbling on and off the day of the shooting. Prior to the shooting, the two men had been on a bus which travelled from near Jane Street and Finch Avenue to the Downsview subway.
Police released images of a suspect from a surveillance camera on the subway platform and later on released the name of a man wanted for questioning.
Curt John, of no fixed address, turned himself into police Sunday around midnight. Police say he was accompanied by his lawyer when he entered a North York police station.
John's mother appeared in support of her son at his court appearance later in the day. She wiped away tears as she left the courtroom.
His lawyer told reporters Monday that his team is looking forward to hearing the evidence against his client.
"He's obviously concerned," said Rohan Robinson. "He is maintaining his innocence. We're looking forward to getting disclosure and having this matter move along quickly in court."
John faces 12 charges, including attempted murder. The charges also include suspected offences in other unrelated criminal incidents, including:
- an armed robbery/car jacking on Jan. 28, 2009
- an assault and robbery of a woman on Nov. 27, 2008
None of the allegations against Curt John have been proven in a court of law.
