Toronto police are investigating whether a street race triggered a crash in Scarborough that left two men with serious injuries.

An 84-year-old driver was in his vehicle making a turn at the intersection of Brimorton Drive and Bellamy Road at about 1 p.m. on Saturday when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, police said.

Witnesses told investigators the southbound vehicle, and another car, were racing at high speeds, about 80 km/h.

Emergency crews had to cut the elderly driver's demolished vehicle to free him. The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but they are not considered life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the senior's car, a 25-year-old man, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said. The names of the men have not been released.

Witnesses told investigators the third vehicle drove away from the scene.

The intersection was closed as police investigated.

Residents of the area told the Toronto Star they often see vehicles racing and driving too fast, and said they have filed complaints with police.
