PALMERSTON, Ont. - The Special Investigations Unit is probing a crash in Wellington County that left one person dead and two others injured.

Provincial police say a cruiser was on Highway 23 near Palmerston on Thursday when the officer went to make a U-turn to stop a southbound vehicle.

Just as the officer turned on the emergency lights and was turning, the southbound vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and struck another vehicle head-on.

The driver of the northbound car, 22-year-old Katherine McNally, died at the scene.

McNally's 18-year-old male passenger suffered serious injuries and a 25-year-old man driving the second car escaped with just minor injuries.

The SIU is called in whenever police activity leads to serious injury or death.
