Toronto police say they're not sure if it was a car that struck a 22-year-old man early Sunday, leaving him clinging to life on the road.

Staff Sgt. Brian Bowman told CTV.ca investigators are treating the case as a hit and run, but at this point, they haven't ruled anything out.

"At this point, there are more answers than questions," he said.

A taxi driver who was in the area at the time told police he saw a blue van make a right out of the Shoppers World plaza on Danforth Avenue, near Victoria Park. The van hit the man, he said, and then continued eastbound without stopping. Police got the call at around 1:30 a.m.

The driver gave police what he thought were numbers off of the van's licence plate but Bowman said that lead ended up being a dead end.

Bowman said police have questions about the driver's eye-witness account. They are looking to speak with other witnesses who might have been in the area.

They are also trying to access security video footage in the area, in hopes security cameras would have caught the incident on camera.

The victim is in hospital with "serious head injuries," Bowman said. His name is not being released for now.

"It's 1:30 a.m. on a weekend night - there's usually traffic in the area," he said. "We're looking to speak to other witnesses to help determine what happened."
