A Peel police officer faces charges of assault causing bodily harm and perjury after testifying at the trial of a suspect he arrested.

The charges stem from his involvement in an investigation while assigned as a patrol officer in Brampton in 2005, police said.

Sgt. Peter Brandwood said the four-year veteran made an arrest in connection with an incident in a residential area of the city.

The assault charge was laid in connection with events that occurred while Const. Sean Osborne was apprehending the suspect, Brandwood said.

The 32-year-old officer was also charged with perjury after giving evidence about the incident during the suspect's trial earlier this year.

"I can't say what the charge was from, but obviously he did say something in his testimony," Brandwood said.

"As far as the Criminal Code of Canada states, perjury is making a false statement under oath in a court of law."

The officer was arrested on Thursday and released. He was suspended with pay, and is due in court on Oct. 1.

Brandwood said the Peel police force prides itself on transparency.

"All members of the organization are responsible for actions they may take," he said.

"But these are only allegations, and the officer has every right to defend the allegations in a court of law."
