Weather officials warn that a major snow storm is making its way towards Ontario Sunday, threatening one more blast of winter despite the fact spring has officially arrived.

Environment Canada says parts of Ontario could see significant snow accumulations on Sunday as the storm, which is centred south of the lower Great Lakes, moves towards the east.

The weather agency warns that the Niagara Peninsula could be hit with five to ten centimetres of the white stuff. Ottawa and Kingston are warned to watch for similar accumulations.

Toronto and surrounding areas look like they will be spared the coming storm. But that doesn't mean the area will be free of snow. Flurries are expected Sunday night and could continue until Tuesday.

"In the winter time, this would be a no-brainer," meteorologist Bryan Tugwood said Sunday. "This would be a heavy snowfall and we would have warnings out. Because the ground is warm and we're getting a lot more rain than snow this year, it's a real challenge."

The storm, however, is pummeling New York and New Jersey.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and officials are preparing for the worst as forecasts of high winds and a storm surge threaten low-lying areas.

The storm is expected to gather strength as it reaches the east coast, forming a nor'easter.

At least 250 snow plow trucks are on standby in New Jersey. The northwest corner of the state is expecting snow, while the rest of the state is bracing for possible flooding.

Winter storm warnings were in effect for parts of New England.

The storm that has already killed five people and left hundreds of thousands without power.

The storm has left more than a metre of snow in some parts of the U.S. Midwest.

Southern states were hit with thunderstorms, tornados and hail the size of golf balls.
