The mother of a three-year-old child found dead inside a Scarborough home last Friday made a brief court appearance on Tuesday.

Charlene Chambers, 32, is charged with second-degree murder after the lifeless body of her daughter, Keayanna, was found inside the woman's north Scarborough home.

Chambers appeared via video link on Tuesday morning and is scheduled for a bail hearing at the end of the month.

Police were called to the residence located at 16 Ulysses Pl., near Midland and Finch Avenues, at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday where they found the toddler's body.

An autopsy performed Saturday revealed the child died from excessive pressure to the chest and neck.

Initial reports said the girl's body was found badly burned, but investigators would only confirm there were obvious signs of trauma to the body when attending officers arrived at the scene.

As investigators continue to comb through the house looking for evidence, a small makeshift memorial to Keayanna is growing on the lawn.

According to neighbours, the unemployed single mother was new to the area and was described as pleasant and friendly.

Police said Chambers had no previous history with police or the Toronto Children's Aid Society and has no known history of mental illness.
