Witnesses on a crowded beach said they didn't hear any cries for help as a man drowned Monday afternoon in a lake north of Toronto.
The 27-year-old was swimming with a boy out to a yellow trampoline about 30 metres from the shore at Musselman's Lake when he went underneath the water, CTV's Paul Bliss reported.
Witnesses said the victim was helping the child swim. Police said the man went under the water, leaving the boy flailing.
A witness said he rescued the boy, but nobody knew the man was under the surface until it was too late to save him.
"Twenty-five minutes (after the boy was saved), the mother ran out and said that her boyfriend was missing," said Taylor White.
York Regional Police say the man was rushed to hospital without any apparent vital signs around 12:30 p.m., where he was pronounced dead.
Joe Dennis, a beach-goer, said he was on the trampoline when he heard a woman scream for help from the beach. He jumped in, and pulled the man's body from the water.
I seen a silhouette in the weeds," Dennis said.
"I didn't have enough breath to get down and get a hold of him, so I came up for air...then I swam back down and got a hold of him and brought him up to the surface."
Others tried to revive the man before emergency services workers arrived on the scene.
Police say they don't suspect foul play.
