Toronto police have charged a 26-year-old man with attempted murder after two on-duty police officers were hit by the same SUV Friday afternoon.

Police said the incident began at around 4:30 p.m. after one officer was investigating a stolen SUV and attempted to stop the vehicle near a Best Buy store at Bay Street and Dundas Street West.

The vehicle, however, sped away, driving eastbound on Dundas Street, side-swiping the officer and knocking him off his bike, police said.

A second bike officer then tried to stop the SUV, but was also struck and flung across the hood of the car.

Police said the bicycle officers suffered minor injuries and were to taken to St. Michael's Hospital as a precaution, but were later released.

Police said the SUV also hit several other parked cars as it attempted to escape police.

The SUV finally stopped in front of 285 Shuter St. and the occupants of the vehicle fled the car, prompting a foot chase, police said.

Officers apprehended a male and a female a short distance later. Early reports said there was a baby aboard the vehicle, however, police said Saturday there was no infant.

Troy Johnson, 26, has been charged with attempted murder, possession of property obtained by crime, failure to stop for police and dangerous driving, along with Highway Traffic Act offences.

He was scheduled to appear in court on Saturday.
