Toronto District School Board trustee and former chair Sheila Ward has died, the school board has confirmed.
Ward was a school trustee for more than 20 years, starting in 1991. She served as chair of the board between 2003 and 2007.
On Wednesday, her colleagues issued a statement about her death, saying Ward will be missed.
“Sheila was a tireless advocate for her community and public education in the City of Toronto,” TDSB Chair Robin Pilkey said in a news release. “In the days and weeks ahead, we will be looking at how best to celebrate Sheila’s life. The flags at the Board’s Education Centres will be lowered to half-staff for the remainder of the week in her memory.”
Ward was a member of the board of the Toronto YWCA and designed its Women of Distinction program, now in its 27th year.
