NEWMARKET, Ont. - An Ontario court has ruled that striking transit workers in York Region will still be allowed to hold up buses, but only for up to three minutes at a time.

The court in Newmarket, Ont., approved an injunction sought by the municipality against workers for what it called unlawful picketing.

York Region alleged that intensified picketing has created unsafe conditions for transit users, motorists and pedestrians.

The strike is now into its ninth week.

Three separate companies Miller Transit, First Canada and Veolia -- and two locals of the ATU--113 and 1587 -- are involved.

The union has said the main issues are the gap in wages and benefits between the York workers and their counterparts elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area.
