York Region says it's filing a court injunction against two unions representing striking transit workers across the municipality.

Regional representatives announced late Monday morning that the region has filed an application against Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 and ATU Local 1587.

The two unions represent hundreds of York Region Transit workers who have been embroiled in a labour dispute that has stretched on for more than eight weeks.

In a prepared statement, the municipality said a court injunction would ease the transit delays that have frustrated local commuters since October.

"The YRT/Viva strike, now in its ninth week, is affecting 60 per cent of transit service in York Region," the news release read.

Since the strike began, the region has been criticized for taking a hands-off approach to the dispute.

However, York officials said Monday that it was prompted to file the injunction after striking workers started participating in "unsafe picketing."

The region has accused the workers of harassing and intimidating YRT passengers and drivers and obstructing roads amongst other actions.

The transit workers are striking against the bus operators Miller Transit, First Canada and York BRT Services, which is more commonly known as Veolia Transportation.
