It is not snow, but it is awfully close.

A special weather statement has been issued for Toronto and surrounding areas, including Peel and York regions, as freezing rain and ice pellets are expected Tuesday evening.

By just after 7:30 p.m. light freezing rain had started in some of the warned regions, according to Environment Canada.

Environment Canada says freezing precipitation is possible across a swath of southern Ontario, stretching from Waterloo-Wellington in the southwest to Brockville-Leeds-Grenville in the east.

Precipitation may begin as rain but will quickly change to freezing rain, Environment Canada says. About three to six hours of freezing rain is likely for most of the warned areas.

The weather pattern is the result of a low-pressure system that is crossing Texas and Arkansas and is expected to track into New York State by Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada says the system will push rain into southwestern Ontario by Tuesday evening, where it will mix with cold Arctic air and form freezing rain.

Freezing rain warnings remain in effect for: Halton-Peel, Dufferin-Innisfil, York-Durham, Peterborough-Kawartha Lakes, Belleville-Quinte-Northumberland, Bancroft-Bon Echo Park, Stirling-Tweed-South Frontenac and Kingston-Prince Edward.

Temperatures in Toronto hovered around -1 C through most of the morning and afternoon, with wind gusts up to 60 kph.

It is also expected that parts of eastern Ontario will see snow Tuesday evening, with as much as 10 centimetres possible in the area north of Kingston.
