A worker at a Scarborough daycare centre has tested positive for tuberculosis.

Public health officials were present at the N'Sheemaehn Child Care Centre at the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto for the past few days, informing parents and staff of the TB case.

Officials say that while they see about 300 cases of TB per year, it is very unusual to find a case in a daycare setting.

Dr. Elizabeth Rea, an official with Toronto Public Health, said that TB is "really not very infectious but they were working with very young children".

"It's obviously difficult for all the families. It's been shocking to all of us so understandably they're upset, as are we," said Joanne Quinn, the director of the daycare.

Dr. Rea said the worker is not that ill and is doing well at home with their treatment.

Authorities say that only a handful of children had direct contact with the employee, but they won't say exactly what the worker's role was. The children will be tested at the Sick Kids Hospital and will be monitored by public health officials.

Parent say they are happy with the way the daycare has treated the situation.

Irene Fu, a parent with a child at the daycare, said, "It's definitely not something you'd expect but things happen. My child was not one of the ones exposed so all we can do is try and get as much information as we can."

Colleen Reid, another parent, said "These things happen and as long as it's being handled appropriately and with due care then I'm happy and I feel that's happening here.
