TORONTO - The talks aimed at ending a year-long aboriginal occupation in Caledonia have broken off.

David Ramsay, Ontario's minister for aboriginal affairs, says provincial and federal negotiators called off talks after Six Nations Chief David General was barred from attending the negotiations.

Ramsay says the government agreed from the outset to negotiate with only a few aboriginal representatives, including General.

The chief, who doesn't support the year-long occupation, was barred by several aboriginal community members from entering talks last week.

Ramsay says negotiators won't return to the table until the Six Nations community sorts out its internal differences and General is allowed to return.

Six Nations protesters have occupied the former housing site for over a year, claiming the land was illegally taken from them over 200 years ago.
