TORONTO - Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant is threatening to claw back government money from Navistar after it announced hundreds of layoffs at its truck plant in southwestern Ontario.
Bryant says he's "very concerned" about the layoffs, which will affect 470 employees at the International Truck and Engine Corp., in Chatham, Ont.
He says Navistar signed an agreement with the federal and provincial governments in 2003 that provided millions of dollars in exchange for investment and jobs.
He says he'll make the company pay if it doesn't live up to its end of the bargain.
The job cuts start Jan. 31 and will leave the plant with about 400 employees.
The union is blaming the cuts on the soft truck market in the United States.
