Toronto police are asking residents in an upscale Toronto neighbourhood to check their vehicles for damage following a string of overnight car fires.
Police said 10 vehicles were damaged in seven separate fires in the Bayview Avenue and Moore Avenue area, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage.
Det. Sgt. Daniel Sabadic said all of the targeted vehicles were unlocked, and papers or clothing inside the vehicles were set on fire.
“There’s almost a path that moves along, eastbound or westbound, we can’t determine that at this time,” Sabadic told reporters at the scene.
Residents are being asked to check their vehicles for any signs of damage or suspicious activity. Homeowners that have security cameras on their property are also being asked to review the footage.
Fire crews were first alerted to the fires around 3 a.m.
One car fire spread to the first floor of a home at 24 Burnham Rd., causing extensive damage.
“I opened the door and there was smoke everywhere, so I booted out of the basement and ran up the stairs,” resident Steve Bryce told CTV Toronto. “I could see the garage was on fire.”
Toronto police say they believe the fires are all connected, and they suspect arson.
Investigators were in the neighbourhood throughout the night, collecting forensic evidence while a team of Toronto police officers canvassed the area.
The Ontario Fire Marshal arrived to the area Friday afternoon.
Police said no one was injured in the fires, and no suspect has been arrested.
