11-year-old girl in critical condition after being struck by bus outside Mississauga school
An 11-year-old girl is in critical condition after being struck by a Mi-Way bus outside of a school in Mississauga Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred at Lisgar Middle School, near the area of Ninth Line and Derry Road. Police say they received the call for the collision at 2:30 p.m.
Speaking to CP24, Peel police spokesperson Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said the bus was travelling south as the girl was crossing the street.
“At the time, as you can imagine, 2:30 being that school is led out, there is substantial vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area. It’s a very busy spot,” Bell-Morena said.
“It looks right now that the child did attempt to cross the street in front of the path of the bus.”
Paramedics told CTV News Toronto that the girl was taken to a local hospital but was being transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children.
Police say the driver of the bus remained at the scene.
“At this time, based on witness reports, there’s no information to suggest that the driving behaviour of the bus driver was outside of normal,” Bell-Morena said.
He added that resources through the school board would be available for anyone who needs them.
“This is a traumatic scene, potentially seeing your friend struck by a bus,” Bell-Morena said.
