A man who was rushed to hospital after he was trapped by heavy machinery in an industrial accident in midtown Toronto on Thursday suffered severe leg injuries.

The 25-year-old is expected to recover.

A call came in from the site of a condo development at 6 Parkwood Ave., near Spadina Road and St. Clair Avenue, shortly before noon.

A witness told police the man's leg had been crushed by a 30-tonne excavator, Const. David Hopkinson told CTV Toronto.

The man was alert and speaking as crews worked for an hour to free him, Toronto EMS Cmdr. Peter Rotolo told reporters on scene.

Rotolo said the man was "very lucky" the incident wasn't worse.

The Ministry of Labour is investigation the accident.
