The man accused in the grisly dismemberment and murder of Hua Guang Liu made a brief court appearance Monday.

Chin Qi Jiang, 40, appeared in a Brampton court with a Mandarin interpreter for a second-degree murder charge. He was remanded until his next court appearance on Oct. 16.

Jiang is accused of killing and dismembering Liu, 41, last month. Pieces of Liu's body were discovered in two Toronto-area parks, and her torso was found in a suitcase floating in Lake Ontario last week.

Toronto police said Jiang and Liu had recently separated after a four-year relationship.

Jiang's mother was found dead inside his townhouse on Brimwood Boulevard, near Brimley Road and Finch Avenue, on Sunday.

Police said it is not clear when the woman died, but that they do not consider her death suspicious. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
