Environment Canada is warning of hot and humid weather for Toronto and the surrounding area on Tuesday.

The weather agency has placed Toronto and much of southern Ontario under a heat and humidity warning for Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to approach 40 Celsius on Tuesday afternoon, with the humidex.

People are advised to stay hydrated, stay cool and avoid prolonged outdoor activity, whenever possible.

Environment Canada says infants, children, older adults and individuals with heart or breathing conditions will be most at risk of developing heat-related illnesses.

People who work outside are also vulnerable. However, anyone can develop heat stroke or heat exhaustion in extreme temperatures like those expected Tuesday.

The heat alert includes communities in the GTA and much of southwestern Ontario, including Kitchener, London and Windsor.

Environment Canada says the scorching heat will last until the evening, at which point a cold front will sweep in and drop temperatures to a more seasonal level.

It's the first heat alert issued by Environment Canada for the area this year.
