BARRIE, Ont. -- Premier Kathleen Wynne is promising a $100 million fund to build roads and bridges in rural and northern Ontario.

Wynne says the infrastructure funding for 2013-14 recognizes the unique needs of the smaller and more remote communities, and will help support local construction jobs.

With the budget coming next Thursday, Wynne travelled to Barrie today to announce the fund would be "the first step" in a comprehensive transportation plan for rural and northern Ontario.

More details of the fund are expected in the budget.

However, Wynne's more controversial talk of tax hikes or road tolls to pay for transit improvements in the Toronto area is falling on deaf ears with the city's mayor.

Both the Conservatives and New Democrats have said they won't support any effort by the minority Liberal government to raise taxes on people to pay for public transit.
