A woman was stabbed in the back inside a Danforth subway station Saturday night during a botched purse snatching, Toronto police say.

The woman, in her early 30s, was standing on the mezzanine of the Main Street station when a man tried to steal her purse by cutting off the strap with a knife at about 8 p.m., the Toronto Star reported.

"He missed and stabbed her in the back," Staff Sgt. Greg Cantelon told the newspaper.

The woman was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have seized the subway station's video surveillance tapes to see if the suspect was caught in the act.
