A man has been charged in connection with a series of bank robberies committed by a suspect dubbed the "well-dressed bandit."

The suspect is believed to be involved in four robberies that occurred in the Toronto area between Oct. 23 and Nov. 10, 2014.

Police said the nickname "well-dressed bandit" was inspired by the first robbery, in which a man showed up dressed in a suit and tie, as though he was attending a job interview.

Although the suspect's outfit subsequently changed, in each case, a man entered bank branches wearing sunglasses and holding a tan-coloured folder. He then handed the teller a note, demanding a specific sum of money. In two of the robberies, he concealed a weapon in the portfolio he carried, police said.

In March, police offered a reward of $10,000 for information leading to an arrest. At the time, they described the suspect as a white male between the ages of 45 and 60, who is between 5-foot-10 and 6-foot-2. Police said he was believed to be armed and dangerous.

On Monday, officers said in a statement that a man had been arrested last week.

William Richard Turner, 47, of Sydney, N.S. has been charged with two counts of armed robbery and two counts of robbery, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7350, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
