TORONTO - A special ceremony marking the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge will be held April 9 in front of the Ontario legislature.
The ceremony will begin at 9:45 a.m. at the Veterans' Memorial wall, which opened last September on the front lawn of Queen's Park.
The Vimy Ridge service will include two minutes of silence, the sounding of the last post and speeches by Premier Dalton McGuinty and others.
In a statement, McGuinty says we owe a "great debt of gratitude to the thousands of Canadians who risked or gave their lives in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.''
Capturing Vimy Ridge is considered one of Canada's greatest triumphs during the First World War and a pivotal battle that helped define Canada as a nation.
Nearly 3,600 Canadian soldiers were killed and more than 7,000 wounded in four days of fighting. Today, a national memorial stands atop the ridge as a permanent tribute to the Canadians who served in battle in France.
