Mourners are expected to gather near Christie Pits Park on Monday evening to honour a man who died after being arrested by police last week.

Charles McGillivary, 45, was tackled by police officers and arrested while he was walking with his mother towards a pizza shop in the Bloor Street West and Christie Street area on Aug. 1.

McGillivary collapsed during the altercation and died later that night in hospital.

Neighbours planned a vigil to be held at 8:30 p.m. at the southwest corner of Christie and Bloor Streets. Mourners were asked to bring a candle or a rose in McGillivary's memory.

Meanwhile, Ontario's Special Investigations Unit continues to investigate McGillivary's death. The watchdog organization is called to probe cases where people have been injured or died as a result of contact with the police. Officials are looking at surveillance videos supplied by nearby restaurants and businesses.

McGillivary's mother Ann told CTV Toronto that her son suffered brain damage during a childhood car accident and couldn't communicate with the officers. McGillivary was developmentally delayed and hearing impaired.

She said that a coroner told her that McGillivary may have suffered a brain hemorrhage during his arrest. Results of his autopsy haven't been released.
