TORONTO - A two-alarm fire has been contained at the Don Jail in Toronto's east end.
Toronto Fire Services says firefighters found a mattress fire on the second floor when they arrived on scene shortly after 11:00 a.m.
Capt. Don Marsden says although the fire triggered a second alarm, it was contained by 11:30 a.m.
Marsden says prisoners were removed from the second floor but nobody was evacuated from the jail.
One inmate was treated for smoke inhalation.
Marsden says he believes extra police were also called to help deal with the situation.
"When you're dealing with an institution like that, you bring in the reinforcements because of the fact you're dealing with 80 people who are basically in your care and your control,'' he said.
"You don't want things to escalate to a situation where you can just imagine smoke got bad and people were locked in their cells ... It could be a catastrophe.''
