Toronto to start off weekend with overnight snowfall

It's a snowy Friday and Saturday for Toronto residents as the chilly week gives way to about 10 centimetres of snow.

Toronto will get a blast of winter weather to start off the weekend, with the possibility of up to 10 centimetres of snow by Saturday morning.

The snow is expected to begin falling on Friday evening and could continue throughout the overnight hours before tapering off on Saturday morning.

The temperature will dip to a low of – 4 C overnight but will feel closer to -9 with the windchill.

Milder conditions are on tap for the rest of the weekend, with daytime highs of 1 C on Saturday and – 1 C on Sunday.  

The city says it will deploy crews and equipment to salt and clear the roads if it’s above 2.5 centimetres for expressways, five centimetres for major transit routes and eight centimetres for residential streets. Sidewalks and bikeways will be cleared if there is more than two centimetres of snow.

The city advises motorists to slow down, drive carefully and keep a safe distance from the snow clearing equipment.

Due to the harsh weather, the city is activating five warming centres for people experiencing homelessness. Additionally, two more sites will be opened if the temperature drops below -15 C.

- 75 Elizabeth Street (Near City Hall)

- 12 Holmes Avenue (North York)

- 885 Scarborough Golf Club Road

The city also has three 24-hour respite sites, including a 300-bed program at the Better Living Centre, which aim to be operational until April.
