About a dozen homes in downtown Toronto were evacuated late Thursday when an old piece of military ammunition was found under a set of porch steps.

Police said the tenants of a home on Borden Street, near College Street, found what appeared to be a bombshell shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Police said a young woman found the rusty cylinder under her family's porch but wasn't sure what it was.

The father, a member of the military, saw the object himself Thursday evening and alerted police.

The street was evacuated and Toronto's ETF bomb squad was called to remove the item from the scene.

The object was safely removed and residents returned home about an hour later.
