A Toronto man has died after falling into the Trent Canal while fishing with friends early Sunday morning.

Police have identified the man as 26-year-old Jiang Hong.

Hong and two friends were fishing in the village of Hastings, just east of Peterborough, around 4 a.m. when he fell into the water.

A search-and-rescue aircraft from CFB Trenton and Ontario Provincial Police officers joined local firefighters in the search.

Firefighters spotted Hong and pulled him from the canal about 1 p.m. Sunday.

Hong's friends said he was not a strong swimmer.
