Toronto and neighbouring areas are expected to see “significant rainfall” on Sunday.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for most of the Greater Toronto Area, advising of 20 to 40 millimetres of rain that could result in localized flooding in low-lying communities.

“Rain will begin Sunday morning and may be heavy at times. The rain will taper to isolated showers Sunday night,” the advisory read.

Environment Canada added that ponding of water on roads is also possible as the frozen ground cannot absorb the rain.

In Toronto, fog patches are expected to develop later this evening before dissipating Sunday morning.

Environment Canada said the temperature will reach a daytime high of 12 C on Sunday. Normally, the high this time of year is -1 C, the national weather agency noted.

The wet weather will continue into next week as temperatures hover around the freezing mark.

Toronto’s New Year’s Eve forecast calls for clouds and a 40 per cent chance of rain showers or flurries to start the day. Periods of rain or snow will be observed into the evening. The high will reach 4 C and the low 2 C.

New Year’s Day will also be cloudy, with a 60 per cent chance of rain showers or flurries and a high of 2 C in the morning. The chance of flurries drops to 40 per cent Wednesday night amid a low of -2 C.
