Three motorists are in hospital after a multi-vehicle collision in Toronto on Highway 400 late Tuesday night.

Police said the rear-end collision occurred shortly before 11 p.m., south of Finch Avenue by the Sheppard overpass, when a southbound Toyota lost control and struck the centre median.

As traffic slowed due to the initial crash, there was a chain reaction of five other vehicles that became involved in a separate collision.

Three of these drivers were taken to hospital, two of them suffering minor injuries while a third suffered serious injuries.

Highway 400 southbound lanes had been closed from Finch Avenue to Highway 401 for the investigation but were reopened at 3:30 a.m.
