A Toronto man has been extradited to Canada to face charges in connection with a 2005 Vaughan shooting in which the victim unsuccessfully tried to drive himself to hospital in a Ferrari.

Doan Phug Nguyen -- 52, of Toronto -- had been in custody in Baltimore, Md. on an unrelated matter, York Regional Police said Friday in a news release.

On Thursday, U.S. officials turned him over to York investigators to bring him back to Newmarket, they said.

The actual incident occurred on Sept. 29, 2005. York police were called at about 6 a.m. to the area of Steeles Avenue West and Adesso Drive in Vaughan.

They located the 2002 Ferrari on Adesso Drive. It had sustained damage, they said.

"At around the same time, the Toronto Police Service had located a 35-year-old man in the area of Finch Avenue West and Weston Road, who was the victim of gunshot wounds," York police said.

Paramedics took the shooting victim to hospital. He had suffered serious injuries, but he survived.

"Investigators believe the victim was shot after an argument erupted in front of an establishment located at 3232 Steeles Ave. W. and that the victim had been operating the Ferrari in an attempt to drive himself to the hospital," police allege.

Police say Nguyen faces the following charges:

  • attempted murder
  • aggravated assault
  • possession of weapons for a dangerous purpose
  • using a firearm while attempting to commit an offence
  • pointing a firearm

Nguyen is in custody and was scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Friday.

No allegations against him have been proven in a court of law.
