A man is in stable condition in hospital after being shot in the chest by a police officer Thursday evening during a struggle at an east-end Toronto store.
Two Toronto police officers responded to a call for "unknown trouble" at about 2:14 p.m. When officers arrived at a store in Markington Square Plaza they became involved in an altercation with a 24-year-old man.
Another pair of officers arrived on the scene a short time later, according to a press released issued by the Special Investigations Unit.
As the altercation with the man continued, "one officer discharged his firearm," the SIU release said.
The unnamed man was struck in the chest. He was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital for treatment. His injuries were not considered to be life-threatening.
Two of the officers involved in the incident were also taken to hospital. One officer reportedly suffered a broken hand and a dislocated shoulder, while the other was treated for a broken wrist.
Thursday's incident was the second time this year that Toronto police officers have shot a suspect. The other occasion was on Jan. 16 when two men in a stolen car were wounded after allegedly trying to run down two officers.
The SIU has taken over the investigation of Thursday's incident. Forensic identification technicians are working at the scene and civilian witnesses are being interviewed.
The SIU investigates incidents involving police and members of the public which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death.
