Two seniors had the scare of their lives over the weekend when two men stormed into their home and robbed them of their possessions.

A 79-year-old Woodbridge man told York Regional Police that two men knocked on the door of his Filomenia Court home at around 7:30 p.m. on Friday. When he went to answer the door, he was immediately grabbed and shoved into a front-hall closet where he was beaten with a collapsible baton.

The man fought back and managed to force his attacker out of his home and onto the front lawn. Once outside, the suspect continued to assault the victim.

In the meantime, the second suspect went through the home and into the kitchen where he encountered a 72-year-old woman. The woman told police she was held at gunpoint as the suspect demanded she give him cash.

The woman handed the suspect some money.

Outside, a passerby heard the elderly man's call for help and immediately called police.

By the time police arrived, the suspects had fled the scene. A tracking dog traced the suspects' scent to a bridge in the Martin Grove and Langstaff Road area. However, the men were never found.

Detectives are hoping witnesses will help police identify the suspects. In particular, they are looking to speak with a woman who was seen walking northbound on Dolores Crescent at the same time the two suspects were spotted on Dolores Crescent moments before the attack.

Both men are described as being about 5'7 with a thin build. They were both wearing black gloves and ski masks that covered their faces.

One suspect was armed with a metal baton and the other was armed with a handgun.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit at1-866-876-5423, ext. 6630 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Meanwhile, both seniors are safe and recovering at home.

Police sent the male victim to hospital so that he could be treated for minor injuries but he was released shortly afterwards. The female victim was shaken but not injured in the home invasion.

Authorities are using the opportunity to remind the public to be vigilant about their surroundings.

"Always know who is at the door before opening it and report suspicious vehicles and people to police. We will respond to these calls," police said in a news release issued Tuesday. "If you are not comfortable, don't answer the door. That is your right."
