Former U.S. president Bill Clinton has weighed in on the scandals surrounding Rob Ford, telling late-night TV talk show host Jimmy Kimmel that the Toronto mayor has broken all Canadian stereotypes.
Clinton appeared on last night's episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" to discuss speculation that his wife Hillary may run for president in 2016, but was dragged into a discussion about politics north of the border by the show's host.
"Have you been following Toronto Mayor Rob Ford?" Kimmel asked Clinton.
"I know he's Canadian but I would love it if you could put a word in with Hillary -- a potential running mate, I don't know. Maybe secretary of state."
With a straight face, Clinton conceded: "I will say this. He has absolutely destroyed every stereotype people have about Canadians."
"The Canadians are upbeat, optimistic, can-do. They are embracing, they're inclusive," Clinton said. "Everything I ever believed about Canadians, ol' Rob has proved (that) stereotypes are not good, positive or negative I guess."
Ford has been a favourite topic of late-night TV monologues since he admitted last year to smoking crack cocaine “probably in one of my drunken stupors."
Clinton is no stranger to political scandal, either, after his presidency was overshadowed by a sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky in 1995 and 1996. The affair led to him being impeached and nearly kicked out of office.
