TORONTO - The eyebrow-raising question of whether Ontario schools should ban chocolate milk has the Opposition declaring victory and the governing Liberals crying foul.

Conservative Ernie Hardeman says the government reversed a proposed ban on large containers of chocolate milk after he brought it up in the legislature.

He says a committee deciding what's sold in school vending machines wanted to get rid of the half-litre containers because of their high sugar content.

Smaller containers of chocolate milk would still be allowed, but Hardeman says the prospect of a ban raised a red flag with dairy farmers.

But a spokesman for Education Minister Leona Dowbrowsky insists the government was never going to ban chocolate milk.

Frank Clarke says the ministry will make sure that schools can continue to stock it in whatever carton size they want.
