Durham Regional Police say they don't know what ingredient caused four dogs to fall ill after they ingested cupcakes found in a public park in Port Perry, Ont.

Police were called to Ash Street's Poplar Park on Tuesday morning after learning that several dogs had become sick soon after eating food that had been discarded on the ground. As of Wednesday morning, police have confirmed four such cases.

Sgt. Nancy van Rooy told ctvtoronto.ca on Wednesday that although a local veterinarian had suggested that the cupcakes may have contained anti-freeze -- and some media reports have suggested they contained hashish -- nothing has been confirmed yet.

"Our tests have not yet been returned to us," van Rooy said in a phone interview on Wednesday morning. "It's just speculation at this point and time in terms of what the actual substance may have been."

While van Rooy said she could not be sure when test results would be available, she expected that authorities would have that information "fairly soon," perhaps within a few days.

On Tuesday, authorities searched Poplar Park but could not find any further food samples of concern.

The park is now open to the public and there have been no further reports of sick dogs, van Rooy said.

Police say they want to speak with people who may have information on who placed the cupcakes in the park. Investigators can be reached at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2686.
