Toronto police are appealing for help in their investigation of a shooting in the Rogers Road and Keele Street.

Det. Sgt. Pauline Gray told a news conference on Thursday that investigators believe the Tuesday night shooting started with a scuffle at a community centre in the area before tragically escalating.

The suppertime shooting left Toronto resident Danny Lewis, 19, mortally wounded with gunshot wounds to his lower back and buttocks. He is Toronto's 14th homicide victim of 2009.

Gray said Lewis had been participating at a program for youth.

"Anybody who was at the community centre or in and around George Harvey Collegiate at around 6 p.m. that evening and who saw the altercation, I'm imploring that they come speak to us at 12 Division or at Homicide," she said.

Gray said the genesis of the incident might have appeared minor to onlookers.

"Like many of these things ... not that it should ever result this way, but the argument really was quite small," she said. "People who saw the altercation might not realize it was the beginning of this, so I want them to turn their minds back to a group of young men having an argument or a scuffle."

The actual shooting took place in a laneway off Dunraven Drive. One witness heard an argument followed by three shots. Another witness told the Toronto Star he heard someone yell, "don't disrespect me."

Two individuals fled the area. Police have a young offender in custody and have charged that individual with second-degree murder. They have also recovered a firearm, she said.

One assailant who ran across Keele Street near Aileen Avenue may have almost been clipped by a white van, Gray said.

"It's imperative that I talk to (the van driver) in the next day or so," she said.

In a news release, police describe the second suspect as "black, young in appearance, wearing
jeans and a hoodie."

Police in 12 Division are also investigating a Wednesday night shooting at a bus stop located on the corner of Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue.

The 29-year-old victim in that case has reportedly taken a turn for the worse may die, and so homicide officers are taking over the investigation.
