Toronto police have taken two people into custody in connection with the shooting death of a teen in the city's west end Tuesday evening.

Const. Tony Vella said Wednesday a young offender and an 18-year-old have been taken in for questioning but that police have not laid any charges yet.

The shooting took place in a laneway off Dunraven, in the Rogers Road and Keele Street area, at around 6:20 p.m.

One witness who didn't want to be named said they heard someone shout, "Don't disrespect me," before gunshots were fired, according to the Toronto Star.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene where they found the 19-year-old man in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his back. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

The victim , Danny Lewis, is the 14th homicide victim of 2009. He has a three-year-old son.

Brent Karding, who had been working nearby, came upon the shooting victim, who was a complete stranger to him.

He heard an argument, then three gunshots.

"I asked if there was anything I could do to help, and the police officer said just wait there. Then the ambulance came and worked on him, and then they took him away," Karding told CTV Toronto.

Eyewitnesses say they saw two teens flee the scene, crossing Keele Street and heading west.

Police found a firearm a short distance away and the forensics unit has been called in to investigate.

Investigators had been looking for two suspects. They described them as follows:

  • Suspect 1: Male, black, 16-18 years old, 6' tall, 150 lbs., skinny build, black hair
  • Suspect 2: Male, black, 18-20 years old, 180 lbs., medium build, short hair in afro style

This is the third homicide in the area in recent months.
