Toronto police are investigating a shooting in the Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue area that has left its victim in critical condition.

"They're operating on him right now," Staff Sgt. Colin Greenaway of Toronto Police Service's 12 Division told ctvtoronto.ca about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Paramedics took the victim to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, which has a specialized trauma unit.

The victim is believed to have suffered gunshot wounds to his head and leg. He was conscious and breathing when emergency personnel arrived.

The shooting occurred just before 7 p.m. on Wednesday near a TTC bus stop.

The suspect -- a black male aged 19 to 20, wearing a black hoodie -- ran off into nearby Eglinton Flats Park.

Toronto police launched a search for him, one that established a large perimeter. A police dog trained specifically to help in firearms cases had also been brought in.

Greenaway said police do not have a suspect in custody at this point and said the intensive search of the area might be winding down at this time.
