Toronto police are looking for suspects after a 17-year-old girl was shot in the leg while riding the subway on Friday night.

Witnesses said two girls and two men were arguing on the northbound train near Spadina station just before 9 p.m.

"The two ladies and two guys had an argument, and then the ladies tried to knife the two guys," said witness Manou Navai. "I couldn't hear exactly what the argument was about."

"We arrived at the station, and I heard two pops, and everybody got off the train, so I figured I should get off the train too," said rider Sean Speake.

"The next thing I knew, she staggered back and said she had been shot."

Panicked commuters fled the scene screaming.

Rob Davis, former vice-chairman of the TTC, was about to board the train when the shooting occurred. He called 911.

"This is very close to home, when somebody gets shot about 10 feet away from you when you're going home from a day of shopping," Davis said. "It's a problem."

The victim's wound is not considered life threatening.

Police closed the Spadina-University line to investigate. The TTC brought in shuttle buses to transport commuters.

No suspect descriptions have been released.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 53 Division police at 416-808-5304 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
