Toronto police have arrested the alleged gunman in the slaying of 18-year-old Abdikarim Ahmed Abdikarim, who died after being hit in a shooting spree in the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood last month.

Owen Anthony Smith, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. He is to appear in court on Saturday.

"Another person is under investigation at this time for (allegedly) aiding and assisting Mr. Smith," Det. Sgt. Brian Borg told reporters on Friday afternoon.

"Pending the outcome of that investigation, we'll be determining whether or not we'll be laying charges against her."

Officers made the first arrest in the case on March 30 when they apprehended 25-year-old Wendell Damian Cuff in a pre-dawn raid. He has been denied bail and also faces one count of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. Investigators allege he is an accomplice in the shooting.

On March 14, six people were hanging out outside a housing complex home on Amaranth Court, near Lawrence Avenue and Allen Road, when a man walked up to them and started shooting.

Police released security footage of the vicious attack, which also showed a second man walking closely behind the shooter.

Abdikarim, an aspiring doctor, was shot in head and died from his injuries.

After the video was released to the public, police began receiving tips about the possible shooter. Detectives said the public played an instrument role in helping them make arrests.

Police say the shooting was a targeted attack that is not gang-related. Investigators say the victims and the accused knew each other
