Police are worried that a knife-wielding man who stabbed a woman at a subway station may strike again.

The search for a suspect began after a woman was stabbed in the back while standing on the Main Street subway platform Saturday night.

Police say the attack was unprovoked and the attacker said nothing to the victim before he struck. The suspect reportedly stared at the woman for a few moments after the attack before two other women began to scream.

Once the screaming began, the suspect is said to have fled.

The woman, who is in her 30s but has not been identified, was treated at hospital for a wound that was not considered life-threatening.

Police said they do not know the motive for the attack. Investigators have ruled out a robbery attempt and said it may have been a "random act of violence."

Surveillance video from the Toronto Transit Commission is being reviewed by investigators. Officers hope the suspect's image was caught on camera.

Police are also concerned that he may attack again. In a written statement, police reminded people to "be aware of their surroundings while on the transit system and to report any suspicious incidents to police."

Anyone with information about Saturday's incident is asked to call police at (416) 808-5400 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS (8477).
