Homicide investigators in Malton are probing a fatal altercation between two men outside of a rooming house.

Police were called to a rooming house on Shallford Road at about 7:15 p.m. on Monday. When they arrived, they found one man with "obvious signs of trauma," outside the residence, said Const. Wayne Patterson with Peel Regional Police.

"The victim was rushed to hospital but he succumbed to his injuries," he told CTV.ca Tuesday morning.

A mobile command post has been set up at the scene as investigators search the neighbourhood for witnesses. No arrests have been made but several people who were inside the residence at the time of the altercation are being interviewed, police said.

Keith Shortridge, a 43-year-old Malton resident, is Peel region's 9th homicide victim of the year.

In 2007, there were 14 murders in the region.
