A downtown street party celebrating the Toronto Maple Leafs' season opener has closed portions of Yonge Street for the rest of the day.

The Leafs will host the Montreal Canadiens at the Air Canada Centre at 7 p.m. tonight in the first game of the 2010-11 NHL season.

Part of Yonge Street closed this morning around Yonge and Dundas Square, the site of the NHL's annual Face Off hockey festival.

The party will include performances from Hedley, Down With Webster and Hey Rosetta!, as well as hockey-related games and special guest appearances from former NHL players.

The event will run between noon and the end of the game.

Yonge Street will be closed between Gerrard and Richmond Streets until 10 p.m., while the stretch between Dundas and Queen Streets will remain closed until Friday at 6 a.m.

Dundas Street will remain open throughout the day. The Eaton Centre will still be accessible via Shuter Street.

Toronto police are urging drivers to expect large traffic disruptions in the downtown core.
