Durham Regional Police are investigating the shooting of a 37-year-old Oshawa man who was apparently shot after answering his door in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police say they were called to a home on Merritt Street in Oshawa around 2:40 a.m. Thursday, after receiving a call that a man had been shot.

The victim was found suffering from a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital, and then transferred to a Toronto-area hospital for surgery.

A witness told police that the male answered the door and was shot by an unknown person.

Police say they do not believe the shooting was a random act.

Investigators have since arrested five persons of interest, including a 19-year-old male, and they say charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact police at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 2700, or to call Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
