One person is dead after firefighters responded to a call of a blaze on Carlton Street Tuesday night at an apartment building that housed disabled persons.

Police said they got a call to respond to a fire at 84 Carlton St., which is between Church and Jarvis Streets.

The fire was in an apartment on the ninth floor.

The resident in that apartment was confined to a wheelchair and was still at home on the ninth floor, Toronto fire said at 9:50 p.m.

Shortly after 10 p.m., paramedics confirmed that a coroner was being notified of a death in the apartment building.

The fire was at an address associated with Tobias House, a social services agency that provides 24-hour support to people with physical disabilities.

Toronto Fire said other residents were being encouraged to remain inside their apartments.

The 506 streetcars were diverted both ways via Church Street, Dundas Street and Parliament Street as emergency responders attended to the fire.
